UCC's All-Oregon Scholars
A non-traditional student who worked in construction before returning to college, Freddy is a student through the Transfer Opportunity Program (TOP), which focuses on helping first generation, low income, and/or disabled students reach their goals of earning four-year college degrees. He is currently serving as the student government vice president and is also the vice president for the UCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honors society for two-year colleges. Freddy is a second-year student and will graduate from UCC in June with an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree. He plans to attend the University of Oregon this fall.
Alvia grew up in Lima, Peru. At UCC, she serves as a tutor for TOP and Spanish courses. She also volunteers with the Riddle Education Center. She is a second-year student who will graduate this spring from UCC. She plans to attend the University of Oregon to study business administration. She is interested in international business and her dream is to work for the United Nations.
Alvia was also selected as a 2013 Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar. Selection as a Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar was based on scores she earned in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition, for which more than 1,800 applications were received this year. The program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa.
By virtue of their inclusion on the All-Oregon Academic Team, both Freddy and Alvia are nominated for the All-USA Academic Team. The All-USA Academic Team is presented in partnership with USA Today, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, American Association of Community Colleges, and Phi Theta Kappa.
