SOU Masters in Management at UCC
Umpqua Community College is hosting Southern Oregon University’s Master in Management (MiM) program. Designed for working managers, the 45-credit program is presented in a face-to-face format on Friday evenings and on Saturdays. “We are very pleased to initiate this partnership with Umpqua Community College,” stated SOU President Dr. Mary Cullinan. “Our institutions share a common mission to serve the region. This collaboration between SOU and UCC expands opportunities for residents in the Roseburg area.”
In the Rogue Valley, MiM has played a role in developing the leadership capacity of the region, contributing at the same time to the area’s economic development. More than 200 mid-career professionals have completed the degree since its inception in 1998. Roseburg resident Darlene Martch figures that she put more than 3,000 miles on her car attending MiM courses in Medford. A local nurse, she completed her MiM degree in 2006. “It was a lot of late nights on the road,” she said. “But I got so much out of the program. I learned a lot—not only from the instructors, but from my peers. It was a really rich learning environment.”
Barrett Smith of Winston is a 2009 MiM graduate. A sergeant in the Oregon National Guard, he appreciates MiM’s focus on practical tools. “In the MiM program, we didn’t just study theory. I was able to apply what we were talking about in class directly to my work. I took a project management class, for example, that showed me how to create a plan for my unit’s deployment to Afghanistan last year.”
Requirements for the program include at least three years of management experience and a bachelor’s degree in any field. Participating students will be eligible to apply for financial aid. A complete program calendar and application materials are available from the program’s web site at sou.edu/mim. They are currently accepting applications for winter term.
