GED closeout 300x250 medRectangle Umpqua Community College is rallying GED test takers to finish the GED test by December in anticipation of a new test, which will be introduced in 2014.

The current version of the five-part test – the 2002 series GED test – will end in December, along with all incomplete test scores. If test takers don’t complete their tests by December, they will lose their scores and then must start from scratch on the new GED test, which will be introduced in January.

At UCC, which offers GED testing at its main Roseburg campus, there are 168 students who started the test in the last three years who still need to finish. The last day to complete the 2002 series test at UCC is Dec. 20. The last day to start the computer-based 2002 test is Nov. 18.

“We really want to encourage any students who started the GED test to come in now to finish before they lose their previous scores,” explained Mandie Pritchard, director of counseling and advising at UCC. “So many students have just one or two tests left, and I would hate for them to lose all their hard work. It’s really important to finish out the remaining tests before they expire in December.”

For students needing to brush up on their skills, UCC offers low-cost classes to help students earn their GED. Classes are $42 per term and students can attend as many hours of class as they want. Students who complete 60 or more hours of class time earn a tuition waiver for up to 16 credits for one term at UCC. This waiver allows students to attend classes and pay only for books and class fees.

“The tuition waiver is a huge reward for students who work hard to earn their GED, and want to go on to a two-year degree or to receive training for a career,” said April Hamlin, director of Adult Basic Skills at UCC. “It’s a well-earned jumpstart for adults who really want to get their lives moving forward.”
