Winchester— 203 students will graduate at 7 pm, Friday, January 23, in what has been called the “single most-moving event” at Umpqua Community College – the winter Adult Basic Skills/GED graduation.
The graduation ceremonies will be held in Jacoby Auditorium on the UCC campus. Members of the UCC Board of Trustees and chair Helga Conrad will hand out the diplomas and congratulate the graduates. UCC President Blaine Nisson will speak.
“These men and women have worked hard to improve and, in some cases, restart their lives,” President Nisson said.
Three of the students have been chosen to speak at the graduation.
Between 85 and 100 students – and their families – are expected to be part of the graduation ceremonies. Of the 203 graduates, eight have earned the adult basic skills diploma, and 195 have earned the GED, five with honors. To have honors attached, the student must have earned an average score of 650, out of 800, from the five GED tests – one in reading, and others in social studies, science, mathematics and writing.
