The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community is hosting an exhibit titled “people are always falling asleep” from April 1 through May 15. The exhibit consists of 72 pocket paintings by R. Sawan White.
The paintings are only 3”x5” in size which can, among other things, fit in your pocket. The artist says they are like sketches in paint, or smaller moments than the larger paintings. She likes to think of them as a glimpse of a something (a conversation or event) in the same way you could get a glimpse of a person by seeing what is in his/her pocket.
White is moving into the development of The Pocket Project, which draws more on this concept of exploring values and daily life by what we keep with us at all times, and how our daily life might change if we kept a painting or a thing of beauty with us. Would we look at the world differently, treat the people immediately around us differently, if when we reached into our pocket, there was something we cherished instead of a cell phone?
The gallery, located in the Whipple Fine Arts Center, is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or by appointment. Free admission. For more information, call 440-4692.
