Who is my Advisor?

Academic advising begins after you have completed placement testing and continues through a series of meetings each term. Students are assigned to an academic advisor based on the student's declared major or area of focus. Academic advising is mandatory which means that students must meet with their academic advisor before registering for classes. Meetings with an advisor are designed to provide students with the information needed for a successful academic career. You can find the name and contact information for your assigned on this page.

Academic Advising

Academic advisors help prospective, new, current, and transfer students successfully meet their academic goals. Academic advising is a joint effort shared by advisors and students.  In this partnership, advising is not something advisors do to or for students, but something advisors and students do together over a period of time.  The advisor’s task is to guide students toward accepting responsibility for mature, academic decision-making in relationship to career and life goals.

Advisors help UCC students understand UCC’s programs, policies, and procedures. Advisors provide tools and resources that students will need to be successful. Students are encouraged to maintain an ongoing relationship with their academic advisor and check in with them twice minimally each term.

Whether you have questions about how to apply, application deadlines, grade requirements, transferring to another institution or how to drop a class, academic advisors are eager to help.

Academic advisors help students:

  • Explore and understand programs.
  • Make course selections.
  • Develop goal-oriented educational plans.
  • Interpret academic requirements and select appropriate courses.
  • Identify other experiences that will enhance their life, educational, and cultural goals.
  • Develop critical thinking, decision-making, and independent learning skills.
  • Evaluate their progress toward career and life goals, degree completion, and transfer.
  • Understand college policies and procedures.
  • Connect with campus resources.
  • Connect with community resources.

It is helpful and wise to check in with your Academic Advisor to make sure that you are on the right track. Here are some options to connect with your Academic Advisor:

  • Make an appointment (preferred)
  • Email
  • Telephone
  • Drop-in sessions

Academic advisors are assigned to students based on a particular program of study. If you currently are not in a program and need assistance with any of the above services, please contact our Advising & Career Center to be directed to the most appropriate Advisor or Career Resource Center Coordinator.

Visit Your Academic Advisor when You:

  • have questions about majors, minors, and certificate and degree programs.
  • want to plan a schedule for the next term or create an education plan for your major.
  • have questions about the registration process.
  • are preparing to register for the next term.
  • have questions about UCC procedure and resources, such as "How do I drop or add classes?" or  "Where can I get career information?"
  • are having problems with your classes.
  • need someone to talk to about academic progress.
