Winchester -- The 2009 Open World Higher Education Delegation, sponsored by Umpqua Community College and the Zonta Club of Roseburg arrived Saturday, April 25. The delegation will be in Roseburg for nine days. Four of the five delegates are from Uzhhorod National University, located in Uzhhorod, Ukraine and the fifth delegate is from Kremenchuk State Technical University, located in Kremenchuk, Ukraine.
Open World's goals are to provide competitively-selected, younger, Eastern European professionals the chance to visit the U.S, interact with U.S. colleagues and, via home stays, gain a first-hand understanding of American life. An additional goal of the program is the exploration of potential ongoing projects between U.S. and Ukraine communities and institutions. Several members of the delegation speak English and a professional interpreter assists in translation.
On Sunday April 26, Umpqua Valley Arts Center held a community welcome from 5-7 p.m.
In planning the delegation's visit, we have built several opportunities into the schedule to encourage dialogue and discussion between UCC staff and our Ukrainian visitors. If you are interested in the potential of a project please join us.
