Winchester— UCC Fine and Performing Arts Departments and Umpqua Symphony Association proudly present the Young Soloist Concert at Jacoby Auditorium, Roseburg, Oregon on May 20, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person or $12 per family at the door.
The Umpqua Chamber Orchestra and UCC Chamber Choir will perform Antonio Vivaldi's KYRIE, and Mozart's Flute Concerto #1, featuring the 2008 Young Soloist Competition winner Barra Brown. Mr. Brown is a senior at Douglas High School and a student of Wanda Eddy. He has won several academic and music awards, including the district solo and ensemble competition in 2007 and 2008, and will be competing against the top flute players in the state championships later this year.
“Barra Brown is a phenomenal flute player,” said Bob Carwithen, Douglas High School. “I have been teaching for 20 years and he is the one of the best musicians I have had the good fortune of being able to teach. As for being a flute player, he has turned himself into an incredible talent. There are more flute players per group than just about any other instrument in bands. Flute is a difficult instrument to master because so many things affect the performance, such as, hand position, instrument position, breath support, intonation, articulation, yet Barra has taken on all of the challenges and persevered and become one of the top high school flute players in Oregon. He has done this through hours and hours and hours of hard work and determination. Barra is one of the most dedicated, determined and driven students I have ever taught.”
