Speech Communications (Transfer)

SPEECH COMMUNICATION REVIEW

Speech Communication Studies: More Than Public Speaking

Speech Communication Studies courses currently taught at UCC include Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Small Group Discussion, Persuasive Speech, Introduction to Mass Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Listening, and Public Relations. A Gender Communications course will also be offered soon.

Students in these courses will meet outcomes such as the following:

  • examine the effects of listening style on personal relationships and public interactions while assessing personal listening proficiencies
  • prepare and deliver effective extemporaneous communications and persuasive messages
  • develop skills applicable to work, social, civic and intercultural communication situations.

UCC offers three Communication Studies Suggested Transfer Guides for students wishing to earn an AAOT at UCC in order to then transfer to a university: Communication Studies: Public Relations, Communication Studies: Speech Communication, and Communication Studies: Journalism. For the Suggested Transfer Guides for Public Relations and Speech Communication, see below. For the Suggested Transfer Guides for Journalism, select the Instructional Program link from http://www.umpqua.edu and then select "Journalism."

For the AAOT, students must take at least four courses in Science/Math/Computer Science from at least two disciplines, including at least three biological or physical science courses with labs. Second year foreign languages are included as Arts and Letters courses; first year foreign languages are counted as electives. At least one of the Discipline Studies courses (Science/Math/Computer Science; Social Science; Arts and Letters) must be designated as meeting the criteria for Cultural Literacy; J211 meets this Cultural Literacy requirement. See the transfer school for foreign or world language requirements (generally, two years of the same foreign language is required).
