Employment Outlook:
Education in the biological sciences provides a wide variety of employment opportunities. Employers typically include fisheries and wildlife agencies, the Forest Service and other government agencies, laboratories conducting testing, research and development, and all levels of the educational system. Technician and technical assistant positions often require a bachelor's degree. More specialized, higher paying jobs at research laboratories and academic institutions often require a graduate degree. Students may also consider pursuit of coursework in biology as a means of entry into professional school to become a dentist, optometrist, physician, physical therapist, pharmacist, or veterinarian. There are numerous non-traditional careers that emphasize the biological sciences, such as forensics, science journalism, toxicology, patent law, business and sales. Excellent career opportunities are available in many of these areas, if the student seeks to travel or relocate.
The biological science curriculum is designed so that students may complete one or two years of study depending on their level of preparation before transferring to a four-year institution. Because course requirements vary at each four-year institution, it is recommended that interested students work closely with an advisor to plan their program.
Once enrolled in this program, you can expect to take courses in the following subjects:
- General Biology
- Principles of Biology
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Human Nutrition
- And other subject areas depending on discipline.
