Automotive Technology

 

The Automotive Technology Program

autoThe Automotive Program is designed to provide basic skills and technical knowledge in gas engines to gain job entry in the field.

Courses offered may be transferred for credit to four-year technical schools. You are required to furnish a basic tool set. For current program requirements, you are strongly urged to consult with the department or a counselor.

To graduate from Umpqua Community College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree, you will be required to have a minimum of 96 credits. Minimum GPA in automotive classes shall be 2.00.

Automotive courses are offered in five-week modules. Check the class schedule to determine the sequence in which you will take major courses.

Employment Opportunities

Automotive Technologist (Mechanic)
This occupation is one in which required skill levels are constantly being upgraded. Increased sophistication of automotive systems and the need for computerized diagnostic tools compels schools to constantly update curriculum to meet industry demands.

By the year 2010, 350,000 new entry level technicians will be needed to fill the demands of all the dealers across the United States. Toyota will need 24,000 new entry level technicians. According to the Oregon Labor Market Information System (OLMIS), this career field can be expected to grow over 15% statewide in the next ten years..
